The GPPQE is part of the requirements for becoming a Pharmacist in Ghana. The examination is organized two (2) times a year, usually in August and December of each year, subject to change by the Council. It is open to both Ghana-educated and foreign-educated graduates holding the required qualifications – Bachelor of Pharmacy, Master of Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy.
One can be registered as a Pharmacist only after passing this examination
For a candidate to be eligible to write the GPPQE
- He/She must hold a degree in Pharmacy or its equivalent that qualifies the applicant to register in the country where it was obtained.
- The candidate should have undergone the 12-month rotational internship program organized by the Pharmacy Council for fresh graduates without professional experience or 3-month abridged internship for foreign-based practicing pharmacists.
- Satisfactory Preceptors’ assessment report must have been submitted to the Pharmacy Council.
- For foreign practicing Pharmacist, the person should have done at least 12-months post qualification practice experience.
The candidate should have
- Applied in the prescribed manner to write the examination and
- Paid the prescribed fee
Ghana fresh graduate pay a prescribed examination fee of GH₵410.00 while foreign applicants (fresh graduates) pay $800 Foreign-based practicing pharmacists who apply to write the GPPQE in Ghana pay a fee of $1000
The examination consists of three parts,
Part I — MCQs
Part II — Essay
Part III — Orals
Each examinationable part consists of two (2) sections: A and B
Section A — Pharmacy Practice (including Clinical Pharmacy)
Section B — Health Policies, Ethics, Laws and Regulations (including Good Manufacturing Practices)
PART 1 (MCQs)
Section A — 60 questions (answer all)
Section B — 40 questions (answer all)
Total Score — 100
PART II (Essay)
Section A — 3 questions answer 2
Section B — 3 questions answer 2
Each question carries 25 marks
Total — 100
FINAL GRADING
Part I (MCQs) — 50%
Part II (Essay) — 30%
Part III (Orals) — 20%
